Like most of you (I'm guessing) I own a lot of Dick's picks. There are definitely some great sounding ones and some not so great (just talking pure sound quality here). The last half of these and all the new stuff not Dick's P are all released in HDCD, but the life of me I cannot find HDCD players being sold except for expensive OPPO players.
I am sure I'm missing something, as this seems to make no sense. My last dead pick-up if the Egypt 78 2 cd, 1 DVD collection. Noticed the difference in one song in particular on both formats being dramatically better sound wise coming from my Blue Ray player. That song being Deal where at the end Donna has an amazing ending where she is singing amazing octaves higher than I can hear from the CD's in my good stereo.
I've looked all thru my Blue Ray instructions and cannot find anything written about it decoding HDCD. It might do this but really not sure.
The CD recordings in by Blue Ray is definitely a better sound, but still not sure if this is HDCD.
Any thoughts?

Have tried playing both the CDs and the DVD thru the same speakers and there is most definitely a better sound with the Blue Ray player than my standard CD player. However, I'm really trying to find out if my Blue ray player is able to read or decode, if that's a better word, the full capacity of HDCD.
My big question is why are the dead relaasing in HDCD if players are almost non-existent from what I can discern. Maybe blue ray has that capacity, but I cannot verify this.

I was considering buying an Oppo just to play my GD collection, but then I noticed that my first DVD player from 1999 actually plays HDCDs. If you look on Craigslist or ebay, there are people selling older HDCD-capapble players for reasonable prices.

But why are they using that format..? I don't even understand why they release half of the stuff they put out.

Love the fact are releasing a load of great stuff w/ the technologies to restore them right now. But again reading your response makes me believe you, like I, don't have the answer about Blue Ray being a HDCD decoder. My DVD player is a couple of years old and it is an improvement over my CD player that is probably 10 years old. I'm going to try to go thru the Blue Ray player on the company site and will respond when I learn something new.

There are a couple of Windows software solutions if you don't want to hunt down a CD player that can decode HDCD:

- Windows Media Player can decode HDCD.

- There is an HDCD decoder component available for foobar2000.

Thanks for the reply, I've read this page before, which only makes the entire HDCD conversation all the more bizarre. Besides what your link showed about Microsoft being able to decode, the page goes onto say that CD 's after 2008 are able to provide as good if not better quality than HDCD. It also goes on to talk about the limited options for HDCD, mentioning only OPPO which I already know about.
There is definitely a better sound from my Blue Ray player and the Dead where always ahead of everyone else when it came to sound quality. There must be a reason why they continue to put out HDCD. I guess I'll have to go to the man David Lemieux himself to get the real answer. I'll report back when I hear a definitive word.
